Just found out that Richard D. Zanuck, 77, died yesterday (Friday the 13th, 2012) of a heart attack. He is the son of Hollywood producer Darryl F. Zanuck and actress Virginia Fox. I cannot believe another legend has died. Recently, Nora Ephron died. (I'm still reeling from that one!) What a blow to Hollywood and the world of filmmaking. Please take a moment and look at the long list of film credits this man has been a part of... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005573/.
Recently, I saw him at an advanced screening of Dark Shadows. He quietly walked in and took a seat at the end of my aisle. I befriended a young couple and pointed out who he was. Of course, they had no idea who he was. Sadly, I never made it over to let him know what a great producer he was. So many of his movies made an impression... especially the early ones to this kid at heart. Check out this great article on six movies that changed the world... http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/moviesnow/la-et-mn-dick-zanuck-six-movies-that-changed-the-world-20120713,0,707744.story
Lest we forget JAWS?! To this day, I am still afraid to go in the water! That was a perfect storm of a movie. I love to read about the legendary movies that almost weren't made. Did you know he produced (uncredited) The Sound of Music? Yes, the very musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. He had a good eye for seeing shall we say.. the big picture.
I'm sure the funeral will be attended by many, including Hollywood celebs and esteemed producers. My condolences to Lili and the family. He may not be here anymore, but his movies will live on... xo
